Features and Benefits of the Canadian Benefits Trust Plan versus Other Companies

Shared Ownership

By accepting partial ownership of the benefit plans, the members will have more participation in such areas as plan design, cost control, administration and funding. This increased participation through shared ownership will enable the Multi-Union Benefits Plan and the employers, to more readily fulfill the benefit requirements of the Union members and their families.

The value of the plan is that by virtue of the CAUS Board affiliation, it is uniquely positioned to create and offer a national benefits program at highly competitive pricing levels. Additional value-added features of the plan include the ability to provide advice to unions on collective bargaining issues related to employee benefits, and also to offer an entry level benefits program for workplaces without existing coverage.

The Canadian Benefits Trust is a national multi-union benefits program dedicated to providing high-quality, cost effective service to the labour movement. The plan recognizes the increasing importance of benefit issues in the collective bargaining process, and recognizes the trend towards unions gaining control of their member’s benefit programs.

There are several key features to the Canadian Benefits Trust:

1. Potential for a multi-union board with representation from national and provincial union leadership;

2. Supplier agreements with companies that are fully or majority union owned and offer bilingual service;

3. The ability to deliver significant pricing discounts and provide control over price increases

4. Access to other high demand products and services at discount prices from union owned businesses.

In the majority of situations the union has very limited or no information and zero input into the benefits program. The Canadian Benefits Trust provides the same information to both the union and the employer, (within the scope of the privacy laws), thus enabling the participants to jointly make decisions regarding the plan. This shifts the complete control of Health & Welfare Benefits from the employer and enables the union to share some of the control and decision making.
